Geochemical Analysis - Exploration

The BIG-Method (Biologic - Isotopic - Geochemical) is a new developed surface exploration method for hydrocarbons.

Surface-near or in sediments stored hydrocarbons from the underground can be identified and characterised by BIG . Additionally, he lateral extent of accumulations and the type and quality of hydrocarbons is identified. A main advantange offers the multi - disciplinary approach of the method where three different, undependant hydrocarbon signatures form the underground are investigated. Interpretation of the data base and modelling leads to a ranking order of proposed well sites.

BIG Exploration Tool:

Integrates three different HC - Indications from the Underground:

B Determination of growth and activity of hydrocarbon oxidizing bacteria
I Stable isotope analysis 13C/12C to characterize the origin of hydrocarbons
G Molecular analysis of adsorbed gases and UV-fluorescence analysis of sediment extracts

The data base delivers information for the oil exploration about the genetic history of hydrocarons and wether or not a given seismic structure is filled with gas or oil.

The "dry – hole – risk“ is significantly reduced. BIG complements exploration projects with important information about the hydrocarbon habitat before drilling!

BIG and parts of the method were applied worldwide in many on-shore and off-shore exploration projects for different oil companies:

  • Arctic Sea, Golf of Mexiko, Alaska
  • Switzerland, Oman, Yemen, North Sea
  • Baltic Sea, Sudan
  • In Germany:
  • Schleswig-Holstein, German Tide Sea
  • Brandenburg, Oberrheinische Tiefebene
  • Molasse Basin, Rheinland-Pfalz
  • Northern Germany
